Elfed High School girls earn STEM award with Tata Steel

Twenty-two girls from Elfed High School in Buckley have earned a Bronze Industrial Cadet Award after completing a STEM programme with Tata Steel.
The programme ran from October to June and was led by Debbie Jones Walters, Communication and Engagement Manager for Building Systems UK.
Lisa MacPherson, Associate Teacher at Elfed High School, coordinated and supported the pupils throughout.
The girls took part in virtual STEM masterclasses, career talks featuring women working in STEM, and practical engineering challenges.
One task asked them to design and build a sturdy bridge using only limited materials.
The programme finished with a sustainability project in which teams planned a scaled, self-propelling flotation device capable of carrying CO2.
The challenge was based on the real problem of managing CO2 as a byproduct of industrial production.
Each team presented its design and reasoning to a panel of Tata Steel engineers, answered technical questions and explained its decisions.
Groups were scored on their engineering approach, presentation and teamwork.
The programme ended with a celebration day at Tata Steel’s Shotton site.
The pupils took part in further teamwork activities and were presented with their certificates by Jo Evans, Managing Director for Building Systems at Tata Steel.
Tata Steel has run its Shotton site for decades and is one of the larger employers in the Deeside area.
