Storyhouse Elders Festival will return to Chester this autumn with a week of events designed to celebrate creativity in later life.

The festival runs from 13 to 17 October 2025 and will feature music, theatre, talks, photography, workshops, wellness sessions and crafts. Organisers say it aims to explore and celebrate the richness of growing older.

Carys Williams, Head of Creative Communities at Storyhouse, said: “Storyhouse Elders is about visibility, voice and joy. Whether you’re stepping on stage for the first time or just curious to try something new, this is a week where everyone is invited to be creative at any age.”

The festival will open on Monday with a launch event featuring Rock Choir and Sankofa Singers from Ready Generations, hosted by actor Nick Fry. A performance by theatre company Doms & Dahlias, a group of African-Caribbean women sharing stories through music, dance and memories of the Manchester music scene, will also take place.

Tuesday will focus on storytelling, including a talk from Reverend Dr Andrea Russell, Director of Gladstone’s Library, followed by a workshop with poet and rapper Joy France, who began performing in her sixties.

Wednesday’s programme includes ocean rower and paramedic Rachel Smith, a double Guinness World Record holder, and grief counsellor Nicola Marshall. Guided walks through Chester will also explore the city’s literary and historical landscape.

On Thursday, award-winning photographer Jim Holmes returns to the festival with stories from the Mekong River and the River Dee.

The week concludes on Friday with a workshop on voice and confidence led by actor Janice Fryett, followed by an intergenerational finale of song and performance.

All events are Pay What You Can (£0–£5), to ensure they are accessible for everyone.

Full details and booking information are available at storyhouse.com/elders or by calling the box office on 01244 409 113.
