Red flare sighting sparks late-night River Dee search

Coastguard teams and RNLI lifeboats carried out an overnight search on the River Dee following reports of a flare sighting.
Flint Coastguard Rescue Team said they were called at 22:28 on Saturday 6 September to reports of a red flare mid channel in the Llanerch Y Mor area. A white light was also reported close to the flare sighting.
Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team, RNLI Flint Lifeboat, RNLI West Kirby Lifeboat and the Coastguard Rescue 936 helicopter were also tasked.
Together, lifeboats searched the water with helicopter support overhead, while Coastguard teams checked beaches and spoke with members of the public. One couple also reported seeing a red firework on the Wirral side.
After a thorough search into the early hours, nothing was found and all units were stood down.
Flint Coastguard Rescue Team said: “The first informant absolutely did the right thing – if you ever see a flare at the coast, please call it in on 999 to the Coastguard. It’s always better to check than risk a life.”
