Police in Chester have seized 15 illegal e-bikes, off-road motorbikes, quad bikes and other high-powered vehicles being used on roads and in pedestrian areas during a targeted day of action.

The operation took place on Wednesday 6 August as part of Operation Lawmaker, a county-wide crackdown on the anti-social and dangerous use of non-road-legal vehicles.

Officers from Local Policing and Roads Crime units were joined by the Constabulary’s Drone Unit, Vehicle Recovery teams, Beat Teams and Motorcycle Unit. They targeted hotspot areas and known offenders linked to unsafe riding in public spaces.

Over recent months, Operation Lawmaker has been developed in response to repeated concerns from residents about the use of high-powered bikes on public roads, footpaths and in town centres.

As well as the 15 vehicle seizures, the day’s results included:

-19 Traffic Offence Reports for using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing seatbelts and carrying insecure loads

-Two motorists summonsed for having no insurance

-One person arrested for possession of cannabis and breaching public order

Chief Inspector Cameron Taylor, of the Roads and Crime Unit, said: “Operation Lawmaker has been rolled out across the county in response to concerns from residents regarding the anti-social and dangerous driving of non-legal off-road bikes. Having seized these 15 vehicles over the course of one day is a great result but our work is not done. Our officers will continue carrying out these operations with high-visibility patrols in hotspot areas, targeting those intent on causing a nuisance in their community and disregarding the safety of themselves, other road users and pedestrians.”

Police are asking anyone with information about dangerous or anti-social vehicle use in Cheshire to contact their local neighbourhood team or Cheshire Police.
