Penyffordd institute seeks go-ahead for business hub

Penyffordd and Penymynydd War Memorial Institute is seeking permission to operate an incubator site for small local businesses.
The institute, built in 1922 as a village hall in memory of those villagers who fell during World War I, says its mission is ‘to keep the community of Penyffordd and Penymynydd connected by providing a central hub for community and charitable events’.
In 2021 it received funding to transform a storage garage into a music studio. Now it is asking Flintshire County Council planners for permission to change its use and rent it out for commercial purposes.
According to the application, the revenue raised would support the charity that is responsible for maintaining the institute.
“The garages were converted to studios a few years ago and we want to extend the commercial use to support the charity and operation of the main building,” said applicants on behalf of the institute.
The application also pledges that the space will be rented out specifically to help support local small business growth.
“Following the conversion we have had an enquiry from a local villager to run his fishing business from the studio,” it said. “There are no changes to the building at all, his business is mainly online but it will trade from there.
“Going forwards we would restrict use to small local businesses like this. It generates income for the wider management and conservation of the main hall which is not part of this application.”
