Nurse sets up volunteer-led stoma support group in Flintshire

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A new support group for stoma patients, named Three Bags Full, has opened in Mold, Flintshire, providing vital support and camaraderie for individuals living with a stoma.

Launched by Tom Russell, a Stoma Nurse at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, the group seeks to offer a local resource where patients can share experiences, access advice, and build connections.

Russell founded Three Bags Full after seeing many of his patients in Flintshire struggling with the challenges of living with a stoma.

Noting the absence of a nearby support network—previously, the closest stoma support group was based in Oswestry—he felt a need to establish a local initiative where people could find understanding and practical advice.

“The need for a group like this was widely requested by patients living in the area,” Russell explained. “The meeting is for ongoing support for stoma patients from stoma patients. We’ve had our first meeting which was attended by about 25 people, and discussions were wide-ranging, covering stoma and non-stoma topics.”

The group is open to anyone who has a stoma or is preparing to undergo stoma surgery, and plans are in place to invite dietitians, physiotherapists, and other specialists to share insights and answer questions at future meetings.

The aim, according to Russell, is to make sure everyone attending feels supported through their journey and can receive guidance on maintaining health and wellbeing post-surgery.

The group convenes at Mold Rugby Club on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m., offering a regular opportunity for stoma patients to connect.

With its peer-led focus, Three Bags Full encourages openness, addressing topics ranging from health advice to personal stories, creating a well-rounded support network within the local community.

For additional information or inquiries, the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board can be contacted directly, with bilingual support available for Welsh speakers.
