North Wales Police issue online fraud warning

North Wales Police cyber crime officers have issued a warning about fraudsters targeting online auction and marketplace users.
The force said criminals are using fake listings, spoof websites and bogus emails to trick people into handing over money or personal details.
Buyers may find that items purchased never arrive, arrive late, or turn out to be of lower value than advertised. In some cases crucial information about the product or terms of sale is withheld.
Those selling items online are also at risk. Fraudsters may refuse to pay, giving excuses and pressuring sellers to deliver items first, or they may request personal or banking details to commit further fraud.
Police warned that criminals often set up fake websites that appear similar to genuine auction sites to capture payment details. A common tactic is to slightly alter a web address to make it look authentic at first glance.
Emails designed to look as though they come from well-known auction or payment platforms are also used. These messages, known as spoofing, claim accounts have been suspended and ask users to re-enter details.
Officers said people should avoid following links in unsolicited emails and always check the website address carefully.
