New paediatrics unit opens at Countess of Chester Hospital

The Countess of Chester Hospital has opened a new Women and Children’s Building, including a larger Paediatrics Department designed to support children and families.
The redesigned inpatient area features single rooms with ensuite bathrooms, giving each child privacy and allowing parents or carers to stay overnight. The hospital says the new space is aimed at creating a more comfortable and family-friendly environment.
“We’ve designed this department to feel like a home away from home,” said Pippa Scott-Heale, Director of Women and Children’s Services. “By facilitating families to stay close, we’re enhancing the experience of a hospital stay for both children and their loved ones.”
The Paediatrics team at the Countess cares for children up to the age of 16, with some supported up to 18. The new ward has 22 beds, including two high-dependency rooms and spaces for adolescents.
The department treats a wide range of conditions including paediatric diabetes, epilepsy and respiratory illnesses. It also provides shared oncology care with Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital runs a children’s surgical day case unit and works with specialities such as ENT, urology and general surgery.
As Karen Flewitt, Children’s Unit Manager, said: “The new space allows us to provide care that meets the needs of modern families, with single rooms for privacy, brighter surroundings, and thoughtful touches to create a calming environment.”
The hospital also has an updated Children’s Assessment Unit, designed to improve work with the Paediatric Emergency Department to treat acute illnesses. Families will also have access to a dedicated play team who use therapies to help children through treatment and recovery.
