New maternity ward to open at Countess in September

Expectant parents in the local area will soon benefit from a new maternity ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital, opening in September as part of the Women and Children’s Building.
The ward will feature 19 private en-suite rooms, one of the largest such capacities for maternity services in the region, along with a four-bed shared space for those preferring a more sociable setting.
Claire Davies, Head of Midwifery at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’re incredibly proud that the design of our new maternity unit has been shaped by the voices of the people who will be using it – our service users, their families, and our dedicated team. Every detail was chosen with one goal in mind: to make each family’s experience with us the best it could be.”
The new ward is expected to care for nearly 2,000 people each year, supporting antenatal, labour, and postnatal care. It includes a balcony overlooking the internal gardens of the new building, offering a quiet space for families.
Claire added: “The space itself is full of light and warmth. Natural light pours in through the expansive windows, and the balcony will give families a quiet moment to reflect and enjoy the view. We believe it will be a truly special place for new beginnings.”
Following feedback from local families, visiting policies across services in the new building have been expanded. Birth partners will be able to visit at any time, with overnight stays permitted.
The Countess of Chester Hospital is among the 75% of NHS Trusts now allowing expectant parents to self-refer directly for maternity care without a GP appointment.
