National Grid power line works to close A55 overnight in Flintshire

Essential maintenance and upgrades to the overhead electricity line between Connah’s Quay and Bodelwyddan are underway, with planned overnight closures on the A55 between junction 32a at Pentre Halkyn and junction 31 at Caerwys.
The National Grid project involves refurbishing a 30km high voltage line running from Connah’s Quay through Flint, Caerwys, and Tremeirchion to Bodelwyddan. The current infrastructure is nearing the end of its expected 60-year operational life and requires replacement of key components to maintain network safety and reliability.
Work is being completed in stages, with teams progressing along the line as each section is refurbished. The project is part of a nationwide programme to modernise electricity transmission and support a secure, affordable, and net zero energy system.
As part of the work, the A55 will be fully closed overnight in both directions between junctions 32a and 31 on the following dates in autumn 2025:
Wednesday 3 September (9.30pm to 5.30am Thursday 4 September)
Thursday 4 September (9.30pm to 5.30am Friday 5 September, contingency)
Monday 6 October (9.30pm to 5.30am Tuesday 7 October)
Tuesday 7 October (9.30pm to 5.30am Wednesday 8 October, contingency)
Monday 27 October (9.30pm to 5.30am Tuesday 28 October)
Tuesday 28 October (9.30pm to 5.30am Wednesday 29 October, contingency)
Traffic will be diverted via the A5026 Holway Road and Halkyn Road during closures. Mitigation measures will be in place on diversion routes to help manage traffic safely.
Temporary closures of public rights of way and local roads may also occur to keep workers and the public safe. The National Grid is liaising closely with landowners, residents, and businesses affected by the work to minimise disruption.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
