Mold’s much-loved Pancake Races are back for 2025

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Mold’s much-loved Pancake Races are back for 2025, promising an afternoon of fun and laughter in Daniel Owen Square on Shrove Tuesday, 4 March.

The races, organised by Mold Town Council, begin at 2pm, with participants able to sign up from 1.30pm.

Entry is free for both runners and spectators.

Spavens, the sweet shop and ice cream parlour on King Street, is once again donating all the pancakes for the event and providing sweet-themed prizes for the fastest adult and children’s teams.

Making pancakes that can withstand four laps of the relay while being tossed repeatedly is a challenge, but the team at Spavens has perfected the batter over the years.

Co-owner Alan Spaven said: “We do all we can as a local business to support events and activities in Mold. The Pancake Races are a smashing community event bringing people of all ages together for a fun afternoon.”

How the race works

Teams of four take part in a relay race, each runner wearing an apron and running a length of Daniel Owen Square while tossing their pancake three times.

After handing over the pan and apron to the next runner, the process repeats until all four team members have completed their lap.

The fastest adult and children’s teams that successfully toss their pancakes the required number of times will win a prize from Spavens.

If you don’t have a full team of four, there will be plenty of willing participants ready to join in on the day.

Jane Evans, Events and Community Engagement Officer at Mold Town Council, said:
“The Pancake Races have been running for over 18 years, and we make sure the event takes place during the school term so local schools can get involved. The children have so much fun, as do the adult teams from local businesses and organisations. It’s always a popular event, bringing the community together. We look forward to seeing you all on the day.”
