Merseyrail launches new Tap and Go ticketing system

A new contactless Tap and Go ticketing system has been rolled out across the Merseyrail network.
The scheme allows passengers to tap in and out of stations using a MetroCard, guaranteeing the best-value fare for their journey without the need to queue for tickets. Linking a MetroCard to a bank account takes only a few minutes.
Mayor Steve Rotheram introduced the system at Liverpool Central, describing it as a “game-changer” for passengers and a major step in delivering a smarter, more accessible transport network for the Liverpool City Region.
“Our region deserves a transport system that is simple, affordable, and fit for the future,” said Mayor Rotheram. “As someone who regularly uses the train myself, I know how much of a difference ‘Tap & Go’ will make for passengers. No more queuing, no paper tickets, and no worrying about whether you’ve bought the right fare. This is about making travel easier for everyone and helping build the fully integrated transport network our residents deserve.”
The system automatically calculates the lowest fare and applies daily and weekly caps to ensure passengers do not pay more than they need to.
A pilot run during the summer received high satisfaction ratings, with 96% of passengers recommending the system and reporting time savings as the main benefit.

Neil Grabham, Managing Director of Merseyrail, said: “The introduction of Tap & Go across the Merseyrail network represents a significant advancement in our efforts to make rail travel simpler, faster and accessible for all.
“We’re proud to support this forward-thinking initiative, which prioritises customer’s experience by eliminating barriers to travel and ensuring the best value fares are always available.”
The second phase, due later this year, will allow passengers to tap in and out directly using bank cards or digital devices such as phones and watches.
The initiative forms part of a wider plan to create an integrated transport system across the Liverpool City Region, connecting buses, trains and ferries with smart, contactless travel. It is also expected to encourage greater use of public transport, supporting improved air quality and the region’s target of becoming net zero carbon by 2035.
Passengers can get started by visiting www.merseytravel.gov.uk/tapandgo
or by asking for support at any staffed Merseyrail station. MetroCards are available across the network, with passengers reminded to tap at the start and end of every journey.
