Menai Suspension Bridge restoration resumes next month

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

The second phase of works to fully restore the historic Menai Suspension Bridge will commence on 3 March, with upgrades set to prepare the bridge for its 200th anniversary in January 2026.

The restoration will include painting the underdeck, installing upgraded lighting, and carrying out final structural repairs.

Although the bridge will remain open, a 7.5-tonne weight restriction will be reintroduced during the works to ensure safety and allow for the installation of temporary platforms and equipment.

Traffic management measures will be in place throughout the period, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys and adhere to the weight restriction to avoid disruption.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, assured residents that efforts have been made to limit the impact on the local community.

“Every effort is being made to minimise further disruption to communities on both sides of the bridge,” he said.

“Following feedback, we paused phase two to reduce the impact on businesses over the Christmas period and increase resilience during periods of severe weather. This has proved to be beneficial during recent storms when the Britannia Bridge was fully closed.”

Mr Skates also highlighted that the decision to resume work in March was partly based on expectations of better weather conditions.

“I would like to thank once again those affected for their patience as we make final preparations to restore the bridge to its finest state in time for its 200th anniversary in January 2026,” he added.

The Menai Suspension Bridge, completed in 1826, is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world and remains a vital connection between the island of Anglesey and mainland Wales.
