Patients giving birth at the Countess of Chester Hospital will have access to a new Labour Ward designed to provide a calm, private, and supportive environment, opening this September as part of the Women and Children’s Building.

The new ward has been developed with input from local families, hospital staff, and the Chester community. It combines modern medical facilities with a welcoming atmosphere to ensure safety and comfort throughout labour and delivery.

Each year, nearly 2,000 families receive care from the hospital’s maternity team, which offers 24/7 midwifery and medical support. The new ward aims to create a “home-from-home” feel, blending advanced technology with a warm environment.

The ward features eight spacious birthing rooms with en-suite facilities, designed to provide privacy and comfort during labour. It also includes two fully equipped obstetric theatres to safely manage high-risk or emergency deliveries.

There are three upgraded birthing pool rooms, including two led by midwives and one consultant-led pool. These rooms have improved features such as slip-resistant floors, better temperature control, and enhanced accessibility for water births.

New adjustable cots have been introduced to improve comfort for both parents and newborns.

Feedback from local families shaped the ward’s design, focusing on privacy, support for birth partners, and clearer communication. Birth partners will be able to stay overnight with flexible visiting times, and personalised arrangements can be made to accommodate individual family needs.

Claire Davies, Head of Midwifery at the Countess of Chester Hospital, said: “We have listened to local families and worked hard to create a space that truly meets their needs. The new Labour Ward reflects the voices of the families we care for, providing a supportive and comfortable environment where they can bring their babies into the world.”

The Labour Ward is set to open in September as part of the new Women and Children’s Building, which will bring all related services together under one roof.
