HMRC: Parents urged to renew Child Benefit before 31 August

Parents are being urged to extend their Child Benefit claim by 31 August or risk losing payments in September.
More than 509,000 families with 16 to 19-year-olds in full-time education or approved training have already renewed their claim. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said a record 67 per cent have done so online using the HMRC app or digital service.
Child Benefit is worth £26.05 a week, or £1,354.60 a year, for the eldest or only child, and £17.25 a week, or £897 a year, for each additional child.
HMRC has contacted 1.5 million eligible parents to remind them of the deadline.
The quickest way to extend a claim is online or through the HMRC app. Parents can also scan the QR code in reminder letters to access the service directly.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, said:
“Teenagers can be expensive and Child Benefit is an important source of income for your household. As soon as you know what your teen is doing in September, don’t miss out. You can extend your claim in minutes through the HMRC app or online to ensure your payments continue.”
Child Benefit can continue for young people in non-advanced education and unpaid approved training. From 1 September, eligibility will also include teenagers who are home educated or unable to attend college due to illness or disability.
Families with an individual income between £60,000 and £80,000 may be liable for the High Income Child Benefit Charge. HMRC has introduced a new digital service allowing eligible parents to pay this through their PAYE tax code, though they can still use Self Assessment if they prefer.
Parents who have previously opted out of Child Benefit can restart payments online or via the app.
