Hawarden High students win award for energy-saving tech

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A group of Year 12 students from Hawarden High School has been recognised for their innovative approach to sustainability, winning the “Best Use of IT/Coding” award at the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) competition.

The students partnered with Aircamo, a local aviation engineering company, to help improve the energy efficiency of their workshop as they moved to new premises.

Their project focused on reducing heat loss by automating the large roller doors, which they identified as a major source of energy waste.

After analysing the issue, the team designed a system that would automatically close the doors under two conditions: if they were left open for a set period or if the internal temperature dropped below a specific threshold.

Using sensors and coding, their solution aimed to maintain a stable working environment while reducing unnecessary energy consumption.

Their project was presented before a panel of judges in Llandudno on Tuesday, March 11th, where their innovative use of technology stood out.

The judges were impressed with the practical application of their coding skills and awarded them the “Best Use of IT/Coding” prize, sponsored by the Spectris Foundation.

Speaking about the team’s success, Mr Lewis, Head of Physics at Hawarden High School, said:

“The success of the Hawarden High team highlights the potential of young engineers to address pressing environmental issues. Their project not only provided a practical solution for Aircamo but also demonstrated the power of coding and automation in creating a more sustainable future.”

The competition gave the students valuable experience in applying engineering principles to real-world challenges, working alongside industry professionals to develop their ideas.

Their work also reflects the growing importance of sustainability in engineering, as industries look for ways to reduce waste and improve energy efficiency.

The team’s automated door system could serve as a model for other businesses looking to minimise heat loss and lower energy costs.

The students’ achievement adds to Hawarden High School’s strong reputation for STEM education and highlights how young people are playing an active role in developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
