Half-tonne cow pulled from mud in Chester rescue

A cow has been rescued after becoming trapped in deep mud in Chester.
Crews were called to Whitchurch Road on Tuesday morning after reports that a four-year-old female cow had become stuck. The animal, weighing around half a tonne, was trapped in mud nearly three metres deep, with a fallen branch covering its head. Its nose and eyes remained above the surface, allowing it to breathe.

Two fire engines from Chester, one from Knutsford and a weekday fire engine attended. Firefighters worked with the farmer, who provided machinery, and a vet who monitored the cow’s welfare throughout.
Specialist animal rescue trained firefighters secured the cow’s head above the surface and developed a plan to free it safely and with minimal distress. Using straps and lines, the crews were able to move the cow onto dry land.

The farmer and vet assessed the cow’s condition following the rescue, while fire crews carried out decontamination before leaving the scene.
Firefighters said it was clear the cow would not have escaped without assistance and praised the teamwork involved.
