Flintshire residents warned of rogue traders exploiting storm damage

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Flintshire Trading Standards has issued an urgent warning to residents to remain vigilant against rogue traders this winter, particularly in the aftermath of bad weather.

Rogue traders often target households by cold calling and claiming that storm damage has damaged their homes.

According to Trading Standards, rogue traders often escalate their tactics, convincing homeowners that the damage is worse than initially stated and drastically inflating their fees.

What may start as a quote for under £100 can quickly rise to thousands.

Victims are frequently pressured to pay in cash, with some even driven to the bank by the scammers.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Avoid cold callers: Never agree to work proposed by unsolicited tradesmen.
  • Know your rights: Always insist on a written cancellation notice for any contract signed at home. Do not allow anyone to pressure you into waiving this right.
  • Seek trusted recommendations: Ask friends or family for advice or use vetted traders listed at this site.
  • Check insurance policies: Some home insurance plans may include emergency repair coverage.

Support Vulnerable Neighbours

Flintshire Trading Standards also urges residents to look out for vulnerable neighbours or family members who may be at greater risk of falling victim to these scams.

Reminding them to follow the guidance above can help protect them from harm.

For further advice or to report suspicious activity, contact Flintshire Trading Standards. Stay alert and help keep your community safe.

For consumer advice, residents can contact the helpline on 0808 223 1144 for Welsh or 0808 223 1133 for English.
