Flint to mark 80th VE Day anniversary with special event

Flint Town Council is inviting residents to join a special community event on Thursday, 8 May, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The day will feature a series of activities designed to honour those who lived through World War II and to bring the town together in remembrance.
The event will begin at 9am with a proclamation on the steps of St. Mary & St. David Parish Church, marking the official start of the day.
Attendees can then head to the Town Hall for tea, coffee, and a display of wartime memorabilia, with local school children decorating the hall with artwork, poetry, and historical displays.
At 11am, school children will perform wartime songs and read poems from the era, offering a heartfelt insight into the significance of VE Day.
A traditional fish & chips meal will be served at 12pm, paying tribute to the role of fishermen, farmers, and land workers who kept food supplies going during wartime rationing.
To assist with catering, the Town Council asks residents to confirm attendance by 14 April.
As part of a national tradition, a beacon will be lit at 9.30pm on the coastal path, symbolising the “light of peace” that emerged after the darkness of World War II.
Flint Town Council is encouraging local businesses and residents to take part by decorating their windows with VE Day-themed displays to add to the atmosphere of remembrance and celebration.
The council has also invited residents to contribute wartime memorabilia, such as photos, medals, and personal stories, to be displayed at the event.
The council said it is looking forward to welcoming the community for a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration of this historic occasion.
With a mix of reflection, music, and community spirit, the event promises to be a meaningful way for Flint to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
