North Wales Police are investigating two separate incidents reported by HMP Berwyn – one involving a drone carrying contraband into the prison grounds, and another in which vehicles were set alight.

In a statement, police said: “On Saturday 27th September 2025, North Wales Police received a report from HMP Berwyn regarding a drone which had been found in the grounds of the prison. The drone had been carrying a large parcel. The parcel was x-rayed and was found to contain a quantity of mobile phones, chargers, and herbal drugs.

“The drone and parcel have now been seized by NWP, and an investigation will be carried out, including forensics, to be able to attribute the drone and package to a suspect.”

Officers say they are now carrying out forensic examinations to help identify who was responsible for the attempted delivery.

A second incident was reported two days later, “On Monday 29th September 2025, North Wales Police received a report from HMP Berwyn that 2 x vehicles had been set on fire in the staff car park. The entire incident was captured on CCTV.

“A short while later a vehicle was reported to be on fire in the Caia Park area of Wrexham. This vehicle was believed to be the suspect vehicle from HMP Berwyn which carried the 2 x suspects.

“The investigation is ongoing to identify the suspects.”

Police say the fires are being treated as linked and are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity near the prison or in the Caia Park area around the time of the incidents.

HMP Berwyn, which opened in 2017, is the largest prison in the UK, housing more than 2,000 men on Wrexham Industrial Estate.
