Don’t make this mistake if you visit Hilbre Island — rescue warning issued

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team responded yesterday evening to reports of a person trapped by the incoming tide on Hilbre Island.
The visitor made the right decision to stay on the island and call 999 rather than trying to cross back to the mainland.
RNLI West Kirby Lifeboat safely recovered the person and brought them ashore. Coastguard officers then provided safety advice, and thankfully, no medical attention was needed.
The person said they were inspired to visit the island after watching a popular local social media influencer’s video.
The Hilbre Islands are part of a Local Nature Reserve in the River Dee estuary, home to grey seals and a variety of birdlife. Visitors should be aware that access is only possible on foot and is entirely dependent on the tides.
The recommended safe crossing point is from Dee Lane in West Kirby. Visitors are advised to check tide times before setting out, which are displayed on the noticeboard at Dee Lane and online.
The walk from the Marine Lake slipway to Hilbre Island takes about an hour, following a safe route via Little Eye and Middle Eye.
Visitors should avoid crossing from Hoylake, where a deep, muddy channel makes the crossing dangerous.
Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said: “In case of emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
More safety advice is available on the Friends of Hilbre website and the Wirral Council website.
