Connah’s Quay: Flintshire water disruption prompts community meeting

Connah’s Quay councillors are inviting residents and businesses to a community drop-in session following last week’s major water supply disruption that left thousands across Flintshire without running water for several days.

The problems were caused by a burst trunk main in Broughton, five metres underground and close to electricity cables, which Welsh Water said made the repair especially difficult. The failure affected communities including Connah’s Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Hawarden, Sandycroft, Mancot, and Flint, with many homes and businesses left without supply.

Temporary bottled water stations were set up, but residents reported long queues, difficulties accessing sites, and frustration at unclear or late communication.

Councillor Andy Dunbobbin, speaking on behalf of the Connah’s Quay Labour group, said: “The recent disruption has highlighted the real challenges our community faces when essential services are interrupted. This drop-in session will give residents and businesses the chance to share their experiences, ensure their voices are heard, and help us push for improvements so that lessons are learned for the future.”

The disruption affected families with young children, elderly residents and those with health or mobility needs, with many struggling to meet basic daily needs. Local businesses also reported significant disruption and financial losses.

Welsh Water confirmed supply has now been restored and has announced compensation for affected households, but concerns remain over resilience in the system and how incidents are handled.

The community drop-in will be held on Friday 29 August at Connah’s Quay Council Chamber, running from 10am to 7pm. Feedback gathered will be passed to the Local Resilience Forum to help improve emergency planning, strengthen communication, and build greater infrastructure resilience.

Councillors are encouraging as many residents and business representatives as possible to attend, and neighbouring councils that experienced similar disruption have also been invited to take part.
