Caerwys Golf Club’s 19th hole could be turned into holiday accommodation
The owners of Caerwys Golf Club holiday accommodation have submitted plans to transform the former clubhouse on Pen Y Cefn Road into holiday accommodation.
The proposal, submitted to Flintshire County Council by Owen Devenport Ltd on behalf of Coed-y-Arain Ltd, outlines a scheme to convert the unused building into three self-contained holiday units, potentially boosting the local economy.
The lower floor of the clubhouse would be converted into two units, while the existing first-floor flat would be upgraded to form a third unit.
Site improvements include soft landscaping, bat and bird box installations, and enhancements to the car park.
The scheme is designed to align with Flintshire’s Local Development Plan, which supports the repurposing of rural buildings for tourism.
Jamie Bradshaw, Director of Owen Devenport Ltd and author of the planning support statement, described the proposal as “a carefully thought-out scheme for the conversion of the existing building at the site into high-quality holiday letting units.”
He added, “The submitted designs would be an appropriate scheme for its conversion that would be suited to the building and would provide high-quality visitor accommodation that would make a valuable contribution to the local economy.”
Environmental sustainability is central to the plan, which incorporates measures to encourage biodiversity.
Enhancements include native planting and high-efficiency insulation and appliances to reduce the accommodation’s environmental footprint.
Economic benefits from the project are also highlighted in the proposal.
Visitor spending is expected to support local businesses and employment, with a focus on hiring local tradespeople for the renovations.
Welsh and bilingual signage will further promote the area’s cultural heritage.
Flintshire Council provided positive initial feedback, noting that the design respects the building’s character while integrating sustainability features.
The plan includes permeable surfaces and improved landscaping to promote green infrastructure and biodiversity, in line with the Welsh planning framework.
The redevelopment supports efforts to increase rural tourism while preserving the region’s ecological and historical integrity.
With the site’s proximity to the Clwydian Range and village amenities, the holiday units are expected to appeal to visitors seeking a scenic and accessible base.
The consultation period for the application is now open. Comments can be submitted, and a determination is expected towards the end of December.
