Beginning next month, a large section of the A55 in Flintshire will undergo a major three-month road resurfacing project, bringing carriageway closures and diversions that are set to significantly impact traffic.

The works, extending from Junction 36 Warren Interchange to the Wales/England border, are essential for the repair and replacement of the underlying concrete bays and the resurfacing of the road.

The project will kick off with preparatory works at Junction 36A Broughton Retail Park.

These initial works, scheduled from 26th January to 29th January and 2nd February to 7th February, will involve overnight slip road and lane closures.

The main resurfacing works are set to take place from 11th February to 3rd March 2024.

The schedule includes overnight weekday closures, weekend closures, and daytime lane closures:

  • From 11th February to 23rd February, the A55 will be closed overnight eastbound from Junction 36 to Junction 36A.
  • The weekends of 16th February and 23rd February will see full closures of the eastbound carriageway.
  • Further overnight closures are planned from 25th February to 3rd March, extending from Junction 35 Dobshill to Junction 38 Posthouse.

This extensive project is aimed at removing worn-out surfacing and resurfacing with an improved product.

Additionally, the works will involve replacing gulleys, manholes, and sections of the vehicle restraint system.

These improvements are expected to result in a quieter road surface, increased safety, and fewer unplanned closures for emergency repairs.

Traffic Wales said: “Since January 2020, we have done about 98 temporary road repairs on this section.”

“More than half of these repairs were done during the day with rolling roadblocks and overnight. Doing this work now will reduce daytime disruption from roadblocks and from overnight closure.”

The works will be carried out in phases, with the eastbound carriageway being the first focus, followed by the westbound. The contractor will work in shifts to ensure a continuous working schedule.

Traffic Wales said: “We will close one side of the road at a time (eastbound first, then westbound). This is to repair or replace the concrete slabs and put down 2 layers of new surfacing.”

“We will close lanes from Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 20:00.”

“We will close the road overnight from 20:00 to 06:00 on weekdays and close it from Friday 20:00 to Monday 06:00 on weekends.”

Diversion routes, developed in collaboration with local authorities, will be available on the roadworks page for the convenience of motorists.

Diversion for junction 36A Broughton Retail Park eastbound on-slip closure 26 – 29 January

Diversion for junction 36A Broughton Retail Park westbound off-slip closure 2- 7 February

Short diversion 11- 23 February

Long diversion 25 February – 3 March

The exact dates of the roadworks are subject to change and are dependent on the weather.

Further details of the programme will be released 2-3 weeks in advance. Motorists are advised to stay updated and plan their journeys accordingly during this period of essential road improvements on the A55.

Traffic Wales has produced a Frequently Asked Questions page on the impending works, you can find it here.
