146-tonne Yankee dryer delivered to ICT site on Deeside

Specialist hauliers Collett & Sons have completed the delivery of a 146-tonne Yankee dryer to the new Industrie Cartarie Tronchetti (ICT) paper manufacturing plant at Northern Gateway, Deeside.
The Yankee dryer, a large pressure vessel that forms the heart of a tissue machine, is used in the paper drying process and is central to producing high-quality tissue products.
Its journey from Ellesmere Port to Deeside required a full motorway closure. The dryer was carried on a 250-tonne capacity girder frame trailer, with escort vehicles and engineers working along the route. Utility companies SPEN and BT lifted overhead cables to allow the abnormal load to pass safely.
On arrival at the Deeside site, the dryer was transferred onto a six-axle self-propelled modular transporter to manoeuvre through the new facility before being carefully positioned inside the building and stooled off, ready for installation.

The scale of the delivery was striking: at 146 tonnes, the dryer weighs the equivalent of more than 100 cars, with its diameter and length requiring detailed route planning and coordination. The project involved highways authorities, police escorts and utility teams to ensure the move was carried out safely.
ICT, an Italian-owned paper company, said the delivery marks a milestone for its new UK base. In a statement, the firm said: “We are proud to announce the arrival of the first Yankee Dryer at our new plant in the United Kingdom.
“A historic moment for our team and the entire organisation: a new manufacturing site in the UK, a critical technology for the production of high-quality tissue, a continued commitment to efficiency, sustainability, and innovation.”
The Deeside plant, currently under construction, will be a state-of-the-art integrated facility producing tissue paper reels and consumer products. ICT described the installation as the beginning of “a new chapter driven by innovation, passion, and growth.”
