Ysbyty Glan Clwyd gets £9.5m boost with new cancer treatment machines

More people in North Wales will be able to access radiotherapy treatment as Ysbyty Glan Clwyd receives two new linear accelerators, replacing ageing equipment at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre.
The Welsh Government is investing £9.49 million in the latest radiotherapy machines, known as linear accelerators or Linacs.
These new machines deliver treatment more precisely and efficiently, targeting cancer cells while reducing harm to surrounding healthy tissue.
The upgraded equipment is expected to be more reliable than the older models, which were prone to breakdowns that caused delays in patient treatment.
They also work faster, allowing clinicians to treat more patients each week.
Jaap Vaarkamp, Head of Radiotherapy Physics at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, said: “This new equipment will help us to deliver innovative, patient-centred care through simplified treatments, reduced delivery times and highly improved imaging. It will help ensure we deliver targeted treatment, when it is needed.”
Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Jeremy Miles said the investment demonstrated the Welsh Government’s ongoing commitment to improving cancer care. He said: “This new, state-of-the-art equipment will provide more precise and faster treatment for people with cancer, improving access to radiotherapy services and cutting waiting times.
“It is another example of the Welsh Government’s commitment to improving outcomes for people and follows similar investments in new equipment in Wales’ other cancer centres.”
