Young athletes thrive in Coleg Cambria’s coaching scheme

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A popular college sports initiative is inspiring the next generation of athletes in North Wales.

The Junior Athletics Programme at Coleg Cambria Deeside has been supporting and coaching youngsters for more than 13 years.

Donna Welsh, coordinator of Active Cambria, says the scheme has gone from strength to strength and 2025 could be their busiest year yet.

The programme has been a “cornerstone” for children aged five to 10 years old during that period, providing fun, engaging sessions focused on running, jumping, and throwing.

“These activities not only promote physical fitness but also nurture social and emotional development, laying strong foundations for future success both on and off the track,” said Donna.

“Our programme has served as a vital stepping stone into Deeside Amateur Athletics Club (DAAC), helping children evolve from shy, uncoordinated beginners into confident, skilled athletes.

“Among our proudest achievements were the exceptional results and progress for Jacob Welsh and Lily Noble, our first junior athletes to represent their country and earn the prestigious Welsh vest.”

She added: “Our legacy of success continues with some of the newer athletes moving on to DAAC from the sessions.

“Twins Gwen and Ella Hayes, who came first and second in the Welsh Cross Country Championships, Gil Jung Fook, who is ranked third in Wales in the Javelin (40m Lower Age Group) and his sister Libby Anne Fook who is ranked ninth in Wales for the Discus (Lower Age Group) to name a few.

“They are showcasing the programme’s impact on nurturing talent at the highest level.”

The college hosts junior athletics sessions every Monday and Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm at Deeside Stadium, Connah’s Quay.

While achievement and pushing for elite performance is pivotal, for Donna and the team developing talent and ensuring young people enjoy the sport in a safe and welcoming environment is paramount.

“We are passionate about fostering leadership and personal growth,” she said.

“We offer volunteering opportunities for high school and college students, helping them build confidence, enhance employability, and support their academic journeys.

“These roles contribute towards Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Awards, strengthen UCAS applications, and open doors to job opportunities.

“And while important to the individuals and organisations involved, the sessions have also supported local charities, raising more than £1000.

“As we celebrate 13 years of achievements, we remain dedicated to inspiring the next generation of athletes, leaders, and champions.”
