The River Dee has long been the lifeblood of this area, defying the borders of the United Kingdom to enrich the surrounding lands and ferry millions of fish each year. The Deeside area likely wouldn’t have been occupied in ancient times if it wasn’t for the river, and to this day, it’s still relied upon for industry and recreation.

Bringing the importance of the River Dee into sharp focus, World Rivers Day 2025 gave us the opportunity to appreciate the waterways of Deeside and celebrate the river restoration efforts that continue to be made. Now, people have grown in their love of riverside activities and have increased awareness of the issues WRD highlights.

Naturally, this brings greater public scrutiny to any public or private endeavour that may disrupt the ecosystems of the River Dee. At the same time, people are taking the chance to enjoy what the river brings, including by partaking in the unique fishing opportunities that it brings our way.

Increased Interest in Angling Bringing More Awareness

Few communities in the UK have such close-knit ties and hands-on understanding of the health of Britain’s waterways as the anglers. They can tell when fish are thriving, when the conditions are poor, and when pollution levels are taking a toll. Nowadays, more people than ever are taking to the water for a spot of fishing.

This has been spurred on by a growing focus on the pastime in entertainment media. For the River Dee specifically, surprise hit Gone Fishing has come here twice. First the show’s duo fished for grayling and dace on the Llangollen Canal of the River Dee, and the very next series, they returned for a spot of salmon fishing.

Beyond TV and the River Dee specifically, fishing is a prominent theme in online entertainment circles. Look at any collection of slots online UK players have access to, and you’ll see new fishing games like Epic Fish: Marlin Madness, featured fishing games like Deadliest Catch, and jackpot games like Fishin’ Frenzy: Even Bigger Catch.

Entertainment is teeming with fishing adventures. Passively, this is helping to raise the profile of river-bound activities, and even piques the interest of some to go out fishing themselves. Affection for angling and the rivers that make the activity possible continues to grow, especially for one particular type of fishing on the River Dee.

Salmon Fishing on the Dee

The River Dee is one of the best waterways in the country for catching salmon. Sprawling from Scotland and through Deeside, fishing for salmon here is unique to almost any other kind of British fishing. While the northernmost stretches of the river are the famed spots for salmon fishing, it’s just as strong on the Welsh Dee.

As is detailed by TFP, the Dee is perhaps the best part of Wales for fly-fishing. Grayling are prolific and love a fly lure, but for most, it’s about reeling in a trout, sea trout, or the coveted salmon. For these fish, you’ll be wanting to hit the banks in these autumn months, right at the back end of the usual fishing season.

The key to catching a salmon is to understand that they’re not hungry and can’t be attracted by stagnant food. They fattened up at sea, so the aim is to trigger their territorial instincts, to annoy them, or even spur a bout of playfulness. So, you need to cast, surprise the fish, and reel in, not allowing them time to change course from an instinctual behaviour.

More and more, people seek to enjoy and promote the preservation of the River Dee. One of the best ways to enjoy our stretch is to embrace the waterways with a spot of fly-fishing, even in the colder months.
