Warning over cold callers posing as ex-offenders

A warning has been issued after a rise in reports of cold callers claiming to be ex-offenders targeting properties to sell “household goods” to residents.
North Wales Police say that they are aware of incidents taking place across the region involving men knocking on doors and claiming to be part of a probation or rehabilitation scheme.
The cold callers often claim to be ex-offenders carrying large rucksacks and state they have to sell a number of household items as part of their rehabilitation.
However, police say this is not the case and have warned that the individuals may be attempting to exploit vulnerable members of the community or scope out properties for potential theft or burglary.
The following advice has been issued by police to protect yourself from falling victim to cold callers and scammers:
- If in any doubt, do not answer the door to an unexpected caller
- Never allow a cold caller into your home
- Never hand over cash, cheques or other payments on the doorstep
- Bear in mind that any ID displayed may be fake
- Look out for your neighbours/friends/family
Anyone who notices suspicious activity is urged to report it to police on 101, or call 999 if a crime is in progress.
