Ten Flintshire schools will take part in a year-long environmental programme aimed at inspiring children to care for their local surroundings, thanks to a funding boost from energy-from-waste company enfinium.

The company has awarded £13,200 to support Picker Pals, a scheme that encourages six- to nine-year-olds to take part in litter-picking and environmental learning activities.

The funding, part of enfinium’s Community Funding programme, will support twenty schools in total – ten in Flintshire and ten in Kent.

Picker Pals provides each classroom with a “Picker Pack” of litter-picking equipment.

Every week, a different child takes the pack home and collects litter in their local area, sharing their experience with classmates.

The programme also includes quizzes, creative projects and lessons on how small actions can help protect the environment.

Philip Curds, Head of ESG and Sustainability at enfinium, said: “Picker Pals’ mission to nurture lasting environmental stewardship in young people is one that we are delighted to support. It is critical that we all play our role responsibly managing the waste we produce as part of a circular economy.”

Picker Pals founder Patrick Jackson said: “Supporting the next generation in protecting the environment and giving them the confidence to do so is of paramount importance. With thanks to enfinium’s funding, twenty additional schools across England and Wales will now be equipped with a programme that helps to achieve this.”

The funding comes through enfinium’s Community Fund at its Parc Adfer facility in Deeside and its Kemsley facility in Kent.

The Parc Adfer fund supports projects within the CH5, CH6, CH7 and CH8 postcode areas, helping community organisations, schools and charities deliver environmental, health and wellbeing benefits.

Applications are open year-round to projects that promote clean energy, waste reduction, recycling, education or community cohesion.

More information and application forms for Parc Adfer can be found at enfinium.co.uk/facilities/parc-adfer or by emailing [email protected].
