A significant investment is being made in passenger facilities at seven stations along the Wrexham–Bidston line, with work now underway to install upgraded shelters.

Transport for Wales (TfW) confirmed over £400,000 will be spent between now and October as part of the wider Network North Wales scheme.

The new shelters will be larger, modern three or four-bay units with extra seating and wheelchair space, replacing older structures which TfW says had “done a good job” but are now due for an upgrade.

The work is being delivered by RWS contractors and aims to enhance comfort and accessibility for rail users across north Wales and the Wirral.

Stations set to benefit include:

Wrexham General

Hope

Penyffordd

Hawarden

Hawarden Bridge

Neston

Upton

Where possible, TfW plans to re-use older shelters within local communities or at operational sites such as depots, if the structures remain in reasonable condition. Recently, older shelters from south Wales were moved to TfW’s Barry depot to provide cover for staff working outdoors.

TfW Project Manager Laurie Klimowich said: “It’s fantastic to be delivering this scheme on one of our key lines that will be integral in the development of Network North Wales.

“The new shelters will be larger modern three or four bay with plenty of seating and space for wheelchairs. This will be a big improvement for customers.”

The shelter upgrades come as part of TfW’s broader £800 million investment in new trains and infrastructure across Wales.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said: “Through Network North Wales we will transform travel for the people of North Wales and its border communities.

“It’s great to see some of the immediate projects getting under way such as the station refurbishments along the Wrexham–Bidston line, which we will rename the Wrexham to Liverpool line.”
