Scam texts targeting Winter Fuel Payments in circulation warns North Wales Cyber Police

Police are warning residents to be on alert after a new scam involving Winter Fuel Payments has begun circulating.
Fraudsters are sending convincing text messages claiming to be from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
The messages tell people they need to apply or confirm details in order to receive a £300 Winter Fuel Payment, and include a link to a fake website.
One such text seen locally claimed: “According to our records, you have not submitted an application for the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2025–2026 winter period… please complete your application by 5 September 2025.”
North Wales Police Cyber Crime Unit has warned these messages are fraudulent and designed to steal personal and banking information.

What residents need to know
The Winter Fuel Payment is usually paid automatically to those who are eligible, normally in November or December.
The government will not ask for bank details by text or email.
You do not need to apply if you have received the payment before or already receive the state pension.
Clicking on links in scam messages could expose personal and financial information to criminals.
A spokesperson said: “These messages often look convincing and use official language, but they are scams. Do not click the link, do not reply, and do not share any personal information.”
