Safety work to begin on unsafe memorials in Flintshire

Flintshire County Council will begin essential safety work this autumn to make hundreds of unsafe memorials in cemeteries across the county safe.
Around 650 memorials have been identified as unstable and are currently supported with temporary wooden stakes. The council said the stakes provide only short-term stability and must now be replaced with permanent safety measures.
The first stage of the programme will focus on memorials currently supported by wooden stakes but not yet repaired. These will have the stakes removed, be lifted from the grave, and then reinstalled in their original position at a depth of six to eight inches. The excavated area will then be backfilled and compacted to ensure stability.
Where a memorial cannot be safely reset due to a concrete foundation, it will be carefully laid flat on the grave to prevent risk of injury.
Families with memorials currently supported by wooden stakes are being advised to arrange repairs before the council’s work begins.
Councillor Ted Palmer, Cabinet Member with responsibility for cemeteries, said: “Cemeteries should be safe, respectful spaces for families and visitors. This programme of work is a necessary step to ensure that our sites are safe for all.”
