Flintshire’s Port of Mostyn has been named a cornerstone of Wales’ future offshore wind strategy, with the Welsh Government highlighting its “successful track record” and plans for major expansion.

The Port features prominently in the new Port Prospectus, launched today by the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, at the Future Energy Wales conference in Newport.

The Prospectus sets out how Welsh ports can help deliver the UK’s clean energy goals by supporting large-scale offshore wind developments in both the Celtic Sea and the Irish Sea.

The offshore wind sector is projected to create 29,000 jobs, generate a £4.5 billion economic impact, and power more than four million homes across Wales by 2030. Total capacity is expected to exceed 20 gigawatts by 2045.

Rebecca Evans said: “Wales stands at the heart of the clean energy transition – with a coastline that delivers natural deep-water harbours, proximity to major wind lease zones, and an agile, ready-to-scale supply chain we represent one of Europe’s most strategic locations for offshore wind development.”

The Cabinet Secretary said the Welsh Government’s Port Prospectus demonstrates a “collaborative, targeted and strategic” approach designed to ensure long-term value for investors and local communities.

The Port of Mostyn has already played a major role in the UK’s offshore wind industry. More than 500 wind turbines have been deployed from the site since it supported construction of the UK’s first fixed-bottom offshore wind farm off the north Wales coast.

Port of Mostyn Managing Director Jim O’Toole said the new Prospectus reflects the port’s proven success and growing importance to the sector.

He said: “The Ports Prospectus highlights Mostyn’s successful track record of working with companies within the offshore wind sector. To date, we have deployed over 500 turbines and are in the process of developing new multi-purpose quayside infrastructure for future fixed and floating foundation projects.

“The Port has also recently acquired adjoining industrial land to offer enhanced manufacturing and marshalling facilities.”

The Port’s location on the Dee Estuary, close to major offshore lease zones and industrial supply chains, makes it one of the most strategically placed deep-water ports in the UK for renewable energy development.

Alongside Mostyn, ports in Milford Haven, Port Talbot and Swansea are also being developed to support the offshore wind supply chain, particularly projects in the Celtic Sea.

Tom Sawyer, Chief Executive at the Port of Milford Haven, said: “Pembroke Port offers a prime gateway to floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea, with unrivalled proximity to the proposed array sites and a highly skilled engineering supply chain.”

The Welsh Government said its two Freeports – including Anglesey and Celtic Freeport (Milford Haven and Port Talbot) – will provide investors with tax incentives, simplified customs processes, and development-ready sites.

The Port Prospectus also highlights Welsh Government investment in renewable energy skills, infrastructure, and innovation, aimed at building a world-class clean energy economy.
