Police close M53 between J4 and J5 after fatal collision, appeal for dashcam footage

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A man has died in a collision on the M53, and the motorway has been closed in both directions between Junction 4 and Junction 5 since around 3am.

The route, used daily by Deeside drivers travelling to the Wirral and Liverpool, is subject to a diversion via the B5133 Hooton Road to Willaston and the B5151 Willaston Road.

Merseyside Police said emergency services were called to Junction 4 at Clatterbridge at around 3.25am on Monday 15 June, after a Toyota Yaris was in collision with a male pedestrian on the northbound carriageway.

The man, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene.

Merseyside Police said inquiries established that the man had been involved in a separate collision on the southbound carriageway shortly before, when his Skoda Fabia collided with the central reservation.

The full closure between Junctions 4 and 5 remains in place in both directions while investigators carry out their initial inquiries.

Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, from the force’s MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

“My thoughts are with the man’s family at this tragic time and specially trained officers are supporting them.

“An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of what happened. Although this occurred in the early hours of the morning, we are still appealing for witnesses to come forward who may have information.

“If you were travelling on the M53, in either direction, between Junction 4 (Clatterbridge) and Junction 5 (Eastham), please check your front or rear dash cameras, even if you didn’t witness anything. Sometimes important footage is captured without the driver realising it and this could prove to be vital to our enquiries.

“Road closures will remain in place on both sides of the motorway whilst we carry out vital collision investigation work to provide answers for the man’s family. If possible, I would ask that motorists find alternative routes and avoid the area. Thank you for your patience.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured it on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on (0151) 777 5747, or email [email protected].

Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 26000474896.
