North Wales Cyber crime unit issues alert over parking ticket scam

North Wales Police have issued a warning about scam emails claiming to be unpaid parking tickets.
The Cyber Crime Unit said that despite repeated alerts over the past year, people across the region are still receiving the messages, which are designed to look official and pressure victims into paying.
The emails often use council or government logos and threatening language, including warnings about court action or damage to credit scores.
Officers shared advice on how to spot the scam. They said people should be wary of threats and pressure, watch for unusual payment methods such as direct bank transfers, and check the sender’s email address carefully.

Messages that use generic greetings such as “Dear Customer” or “Sir/Madam,” or that contain spelling mistakes and poor grammar, are also common signs of fraud.
North Wales Police said that a genuine Penalty Charge Notice is usually issued as a physical ticket on a windscreen or by post. If in doubt, people should verify the notice by contacting the relevant council or company directly, using details found on their official website.
A police spokesperson said: “Please share this post to help warn your friends and family. A simple share could stop someone from losing their money.”
