North Flintshire Police have defended carrying out speed checks in several Flintshire villages after facing criticism on social media.

Over the weekend officers said they conducted checks in Gwaenysgor, Llanasa and Mostyn, responding to concerns raised by local residents about what they described as “prolific speeding.”

The original Facebook post stated: “This morning speed checks were conducted by C4493 in Gwaenysgor, Llanasa and Mostyn as requested by the local communities due to concerns of prolific speeding. As seen below there were some excessive speeders that have been spoken to accordingly, however, we are happy to say that the vast majority were sticking to the speed limit. We will be popping up at random times to continue conducting these checks.”

The update sparked dozens of responses from residents, ranging from support to frustration.

One person wrote: “Imagine crying over 7mph,” while another said: “Nice to see the police fighting real crime.” A further comment read: “27 in a sparsely populated village that should have a limit of at least 30 – hardly crime of the century. Try allocating resources for investigating theft instead.”

Others, however, backed the patrols. One resident commented: “That’s great, loads of people speed through that village but mainly on the road leading out towards Gronant.” Another said: “You need to come by the totem pole as you come out of the 50mph, my house shakes with the speed they go past.”

Several people used the discussion to highlight other areas where they believe speeding is a problem, including Penyffordd, Holway, Greenfield, Pen y Maes, Gorsedd and Rhyl. One comment described Greenfield as “like Brands Hatch.”

Responding directly to some of the negative remarks, North Flintshire Police posted: “We got some unhappy commenters on our post over the weekend about speed checks, we don’t just post up anywhere to conduct speed checks – we go where we’ve had reports so then we can tell our colleagues at Arrive Alive and they can head over.

“It’s all fine and dandy calling us ‘sad’ etc until it’s you calling because people are flying passed your house at all hours. Enforcement of speed limits is much easier for our pals in the roads crime unit, they have better tools, but they’re busy dealing with all the collisions from people driving too fast.”

The force stressed that local speed checks are carried out when residents request them, and information gathered is shared with the GoSafe Arrive Alive partnership, which has more specialist equipment to carry out enforcement.

Police said checks will continue “at random times” in villages where speeding is reported.
