New £18m Flint care home set to open this summer

Construction of Flintshire’s newest care home, Ty Croes Atti, is entering its final stages and is on track to be completed this summer.

Work on the £18 million facility in Flint has progressed despite adverse weather in December and January, with the building now fully roofed and fitted with electrics.

The next phase will focus on interior decoration, joinery, and flooring installation.

The project, a partnership between Flintshire County Council, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Willmott Dixon, and the Welsh Government, will provide a home for 56 older people on the site of the former community hospital.

It will replace and expand an existing 31-bed care home, offering integrated social and healthcare services delivered by BCUHB and Flintshire County Council social services teams.

Councillor Christine Jones, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Social Services and Wellbeing, welcomed the progress, saying: “The building is looking fantastic and I can’t wait to see it completed and ready to welcome our residents. This will be a modern, comfortable and welcoming provision for the people of Flintshire. Thank you to our partners for helping to make this project a reality.”

The facility is being funded through the Welsh Government’s Integration and Rebalancing Capital Fund (IRCF) and Housing with Care Fund (HCF), alongside Flintshire County Council’s capital programme.

Willmott Dixon Operations Director Mike Lane emphasised the project’s community impact: “Our teams are privileged enough to continue to be invited to spend time with Croes Atti care home residents, families and staff so we know how important this project is towards providing first-class health and social care services for the Flint community.”

He added that the construction project has already created 13 new jobs for local residents, including roles for three previously unemployed people and two prison leavers. In addition, the team has delivered over 200 hours of educational activities for young people and contributed 170 hours of volunteering to local initiatives.

Michelle Greene, Director of the East Integrated Health Community at BCUHB, said: “It is exciting to be able to work in partnership with our colleagues at Flintshire County Council to provide high-quality services in state-of-the-art facilities for the residents.”

Minister for Children and Social Care, Dawn Bowden, also praised the progress: “This important project will help boost our community capacity and is a fantastic example of joint working to deliver for the people in Flintshire. I look forward to seeing the completed project in the near future.”

As the project nears completion, Flintshire County Council has begun recruiting care and support workers for Ty Croes Atti.

New staff will receive full training and guidance from an experienced management team.
