Delyn MS Hannah Blythyn has called for improvements to the A55, describing it as a “gateway into North Wales” and a vital part of the region’s economic and social infrastructure.

Speaking during First Minister’s Questions (FMQs) in the Senedd, Ms Blythyn highlighted the road’s significance for communities, businesses, and visitors, and urged a collaborative approach to addressing its challenges.

Reflecting on the A55’s evolution, Hannah Blythyn noted its transformation from the days before its construction, when traffic jams through Conwy were common. Now, the route plays a pivotal role in connecting North Wales to the rest of the UK.

“The A55 is more than just a road—it’s critical for communities and businesses across North Wales,” said Ms Blythyn. “While we’ve come a long way, it’s clear that further improvements are needed to address congestion, enhance safety, and future-proof this vital route.”

Ms Blythyn called on the Welsh Government to work alongside the UK Government and local authorities to deliver improvements.

Her proposals include a crawler lane westbound around Halkyn to reduce congestion, and measures to mitigate accidents and minimise the impact of breakdowns on traffic flow.

She emphasised the need for “practical and innovative solutions” that address long-standing issues while planning for future demands.

Responding to the concerns, First Minister Eluned Morgan MS acknowledged the existing challenges on the A55, describing the need to address “pinch points” and improve safety.

She added: “Through the development of regional transport plans, we will ensure joined-up working at a regional level, bringing together corporate joint committees and technical advice officials to deliver solutions that align with the Wales Transport Strategy. This collaborative effort will help us provide the support needed to improve transport infrastructure across North Wales.”

Ms Blythyn welcomed the First Minister’s remarks, saying: “I’m encouraged by the First Minister’s recognition of these issues and will continue to push for practical and innovative solutions that benefit everyone in North Wales.”
