Flintshire marks Children of Foster Carers Week

Children of foster carers in Flintshire are being recognised for the vital role they play in helping fostered children feel welcome, safe and loved.
As part of Children of Foster Carers Week (13–19 October), Foster Wales Flintshire families are sharing stories of how their own children have supported those coming into their care.
For some families considering fostering, the potential impact on their own children can be a concern. But many find that growing up in a fostering household offers positive experiences, helping young people learn empathy, patience and resilience.
Rachel and Andy, who foster through Foster Wales Flintshire, said their family’s decision to foster was one they made together with their children.
“As a family, one of our first priorities was to talk openly about fostering and to listen to our children’s thoughts and feelings,” they said. “We knew it needed to be the right time for all of us, so we chose to wait a couple of years. During that time there were lots of emotions, but the compassion we all felt for children in need of love and care is what inspired us to begin our fostering journey.
“Watching our children welcome and embrace every child who comes into our home has been truly heart-warming, and we believe it is helping shape them into the caring young adults they are today.”
Their daughter Yasmin said fostering had changed her outlook on life.
“Being part of a fostering family has been life-changing,” she said. “It’s filled our home with laughter, new friendships, and so much love. I feel proud to have shared that journey and to know we’ve made a difference in children’s lives.”
Foster Wales Flintshire hopes that sharing these stories will encourage more families to consider fostering, showing how the experience can be rewarding for every member of the household.
