Flintshire leisure centres and libraries to host Mental Health Awareness Week programme

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Gwella will run a programme of community events at leisure centres and libraries across Flintshire during Mental Health Awareness Week from 11 to 17 May, raising money for Home-Start Flintshire.

The week includes fitness sessions, wellbeing activities and a county-wide Wear It Green Day on Thursday 14 May, part of the Mental Health Foundation’s national campaign.

Gwella will also work with Football For Life on a session at Deeside Leisure Centre on the Thursday evening, aimed at supporting men’s mental health.

Home-Start Flintshire supports families with young children through home visiting, volunteer-led support and community groups, working with parents experiencing isolation, anxiety, financial pressure and parental stress.

The charity already runs Stay & Play and Bump, Baby & Me sessions at Deeside Leisure Centre every Tuesday during term time, in partnership with Gwella.

A Gwella spokesperson said: “Mental health affects people in every community, and access to early support has never been more important.

“Through our leisure centres, libraries and community spaces, we are in a unique position to bring people together in ways that are simple and accessible.

“Supporting Home-Start Flintshire during Mental Health Awareness Week is about more than fundraising, it’s about bringing communities together and supporting families who may need it most.”

Sharon Windsor, Chief Officer at Home-Start Flintshire, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Gwella for choosing us as their nominated charity for Mental Health Awareness Week.

“Early, compassionate support can make a life-changing difference for families, helping parents feel less alone and giving children the best possible start.

“Partnerships like this play an important role in ensuring families across Flintshire continue to feel supported and connected within their communities.”

Residents will also be invited to take part in a community pledge, committing to small actions such as attending a class, going for a walk or checking in with a friend.

Details of individual sessions and how to take part are being published on the Gwella website.
