Flintshire improves standing in 2025 Climate Action Scorecards

Flintshire County Council has risen to sixth place in Wales in the 2025 Climate Action Scorecards, which assess how UK local authorities are tackling climate change and working towards net zero carbon.
The independent assessment by Climate Emergency UK scored Flintshire at 39%, up from 34% in 2023, when the council placed eighth. The improvement reflects progress made through Flintshire’s Climate Change Strategy, updated earlier this year.
Using publicly available evidence from 1 January 2020 to 31 October 2024, the assessment covered 93 questions across key areas including Buildings and Heating, Transport, Planning and Land Use, Governance and Finance, Biodiversity, Collaboration and Engagement, and Waste Reduction and Food.
Flintshire showed particular gains in Governance and Finance, and Biodiversity. The council was ranked fifth in Wales for Governance and Finance, and second in Wales – joint seventh in Great Britain – for Biodiversity.
Climate Emergency UK attributed Flintshire’s progress to measures such as including carbon considerations in Integrated Impact Assessments to support decision-making, using nature-friendly alternatives to herbicides and pesticides, and ensuring ecological scrutiny in planning reports.
Cllr Dolphin, Cabinet Member for Environment, Regeneration, Countryside and Tourism, said: “It is excellent to see Flintshire County Council’s efforts are being recognised in this latest Climate Action Scorecard update. The actions that officers across the authority are taking not only helps to address the climate and nature emergencies, but works towards making Flintshire a better place to live. I look forward to working with these teams and seeing how the Council continues to progress this vital work, improve lives and continue being recognised.”
The Council says its Climate Change Strategy demonstrates ongoing commitment to reducing emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change, including improving energy efficiency in homes and increasing access to nature.
