Flintshire farm praised for sustainable innovation

A Flintshire farm investing in innovative regenerative farming techniques has been praised by Plaid Cymru MS Llyr Gruffydd.
Mr Gruffydd, who represents North Wales in the Senedd and serves as Plaid Cymru’s rural affairs spokesperson, visited Clive and Ed Swan’s 200-acre farm in Treuddyn. He described the visit as “a very interesting morning” and said the farm was “proudly pioneering” both in its award-winning farm shop and in its sustainable practices.
“It was interesting to hear their views on how farmers in Wales can contribute to reducing carbon with more regenerative farming techniques and targeted support,” Mr Gruffydd said.
He added that the farm shop, which offers a wide range of Welsh food and drink products alongside the farm’s own homegrown meats, was “a great example of how to reduce food miles” and an enterprise “looking to the future in terms of ensuring Wales is at the forefront of marrying up quality food and sustainable practice.”
During the visit, Mr Gruffydd was shown a field described by Ed Swan as “the poorest on the farm,” which had been regenerated over four years to double its organic soil content. After this process, the field was able to produce two-and-a-half tonnes of wheat.
Mr Gruffydd said: “Welsh farmers such as the Swan family are aware that red meat here is already among the most sustainable in the world. The target, as far as they’re concerned, would be to ensure more people locally can enjoy that produce. It was good to gain some insight into the work being done and also see the variety of work that is part and parcel of many farms today – as well as keeping prize-winning livestock, there’s pumpkin picking, the Christmas festivities and the farm shop.”
