Engineers order closure of Menai Suspension Bridge after safety checks

The Menai Suspension Bridge will temporarily close to all traffic from 2pm on Saturday 4 October after engineers identified issues with bolts on beams beneath the structure.
The Welsh Government said it had aimed to keep the bridge open to cars and motorcyclists, but feedback from UK Highways A55 around enforcement challenges led to the decision to close it fully.
Emergency arrangements are in place for emergency service vehicles should the nearby Britannia Bridge be affected by high winds.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said: “Firstly, I want to apologise to local people. I am deeply sorry for the ongoing disruption that you are facing as work continues to remediate the bridge.”
On Friday, the Welsh Government said the bridge had been restricted to cars only after engineers imposed a three-tonne weight limit with immediate effect. Larger vehicles were no longer permitted to cross, but this has now changed to a full closure following further inspections carried out as part of phase two works.
