Crayola children’s craft kits recalled by UK regulator over possible asbestos contamination

Two Crayola children’s craft kits sold by major UK retailers have been recalled after warnings the sand inside may contain asbestos.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards issued the recalls on 1 May.
The affected products are the Crayola Discovery Craft Box, model 35501, barcode 5061047355015.
The other is the Crayola Touchy Feely Craft Box, model 35052, barcode 5061047350522.
Both kits were imported into the UK by Hunter Price International Limited and made in China.
They were sold by retailers including Asda, Argos, Sainsbury’s, BargainMax and The Works.
At The Works, the Touchy Feely Craft Box was sold under the name “Sensory Craft Box”.
In its notice, the regulator said the sand included in the kits may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos.
It said asbestos was a banned substance because it posed a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.
The products do not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, the regulator said.
Owners are advised to stop using the products immediately and keep them out of the reach of children.
Asda and The Works have published their own recall information and are offering refunds.
For kits where the sand is still in its packaging, the regulator advises placing it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-taping it securely, labelling it clearly and storing it out of children’s reach.
For sand that has been opened or used, it advises cleaning the area with wet cloths to avoid generating dust, while wearing gloves and a mask.
The sand, gloves, mask and cloths should then be double-bagged.
Children and other people should be kept away from areas where the sand has been used until cleaning is complete.
The product can be disposed of in general household waste or returned to the retailer for a refund.
The recall is the latest in a series of safety alerts covering children’s craft kits and toys containing sand.
More than 100 products have been recalled in the UK on the same grounds since January, according to reporting by ITV News.
Parents seeking further information are advised to contact the retailer where the product was purchased.
