The RSPCA is inviting animal lovers across Wales to take part in its first-ever ‘Walk to Remember’ on National Pet Memorial Day, Sunday 14 September 2025.

This virtual event encourages people to plan their own five-mile walk in memory of a beloved pet who has passed away. Participants can walk alone or with others, at a location of their choice, while raising funds for the charity’s vital work rescuing and rehoming animals.

The campaign responds to a recent RSPCA survey revealing more than a quarter of pet owners struggle to find ways to memorialise their lost companions. The charity hopes the walk will provide a meaningful way to honour pets and offer community support.

Jeanette Sinnott from Llantwit Major will be walking in memory of her dog Safi, who passed away at the age of 16. She said: “Losing Safi was incredibly difficult. She was loyal and loving and got me through life’s ups and downs. I will be walking a five-mile route from Penally to Tenby via the beach – where Safi had her last holiday – with my husband and our three sighthounds.”

Those signing up for ‘Walk to Remember’ will receive an event pack including an RSPCA T-shirt. Fundraisers are encouraged to raise £100 in honour of their pet, with rewards including a personalised commemorative key ring for raising £1, and an ‘in memory’ travel mug for raising over £75.

Participants can share their fundraising pages, track their walks using apps like Strava, and connect with others through a dedicated RSPCA Facebook group to share stories and walk routes.

Olivia Williams, Mass Participation Manager at the RSPCA, said: “Losing a pet is like losing a member of the family. Walk to Remember is our response to the need for support and connection in grief. We hope many people will join us to remember their pets and help raise funds for the thousands of animals we rescue every year.”
