Aldi is set to become the first supermarket to pay Store Assistants at least £13 an hour nationwide from 1 September 2025.

The new minimum hourly rate will rise further based on length of service, reaching £13.93 nationally. This exceeds the Real Living Wage rate of £12.60 set by the Living Wage Foundation last year.

Aldi also offers paid breaks to all store colleagues, worth around £1,385 annually.

Giles Hurley, Aldi UK and Ireland CEO, said: “Our people are the driving force behind our success across the UK. This latest investment in pay is a reflection of their hard work and the incredible contribution they make every single day.”

The announcement comes as Aldi prepares to open a new store in Deeside on Airfields, Welsh Road, on Thursday 14 August at 8am.

Olympic bronze medallist diver Lois Toulson will be there to cut the ribbon and give free bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s Super 6 range to the first 30 customers.

Aldi has sponsored Team GB since 2015, providing fresh food and monthly vouchers to support athletes’ training and wellbeing.

The new Sealand store, managed by Spencer Kearney, will create 27 jobs for local people.

Spencer said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Deeside. Having Olympic hero Lois Toulson join us will make it a morning to remember.”

Lois Toulson added: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store. It will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB.”

Local charities and food banks are invited to register with Neighbourly to collect surplus food daily from the store.

The new Aldi will stock fresh Welsh meat, weekly specials, a Food to Go section, and a Specialbuys aisle with changing deals every Thursday and Sunday.

Opening hours will be Monday to Saturday, 8am to 10pm, and Sunday, 10am to 4pm.
