A newly formed Deeside youth football club has received sponsorship from local housebuilder Ashberry Homes to help cover start-up costs for its first season.

Ashberry Homes, which is developing Jubilee Place off Welsh Road in Deeside, has provided a cash donation to Sealand Spartans to fund matchday shirts and training jackets for the team’s first competitive campaign.

Formed earlier this year, Sealand Spartans is based in the Sealand and Garden City area and will field an Under 12s boys’ team in the Flintshire Youth League and the North East Wales Football Association Cup.

Club secretary Peter Fitch said: “Despite having three grass pitches, the Sealand and Garden City area didn’t have its own youth football club meaning local kids were missing out on the health benefits and fun of being part of a team.

“Also, with more families moving into the area due to the new housing developments and our own children wanting to play football, we saw an opportunity to create a new enterprise bringing together children and parents from both the old and new parts of the community together.

“The funding from Ashberry came at a critical time, helping us to set up the Club and recruit players. We used it to purchase match kit and training wear, to register with the North East Football Association and pay registration fees to join the league. We are now very much looking forward to our first season of competitive football!”

Ashberry Homes sales director Jenny Bell said: “With many children from our new Jubilee Place development keen to play football locally we were delighted to help Sealand Spartans establish the new club and kit them out for their first exciting season. We wish them all the very best and hope they have fun in their first year as a competitive team.”

Sealand Spartans is currently run by a small group of volunteers, including head coach John Spens, assistant coach and safeguarding officer Marie Gotz, and secretary Peter Fitch, who is working towards his coaching qualification.
