Tributes paid to long-serving Flintshire councillor Ray Hughes

Flintshire County Councillor Ray Hughes has passed away at the age of 88.
Councillor Hughes was a well-respected figure in local government, known for his long-standing service to the Leeswood community.
He was first elected to Flintshire County Council in 2008 and held various roles over the years, including serving as Chairman in 2015, when his late wife Gwenda acted as his Consort.
Before joining the county council, Councillor Hughes represented residents on Delyn Borough Council between 1990 and 1996 and had been a member of Leeswood Community Council for more than 50 years.
Outside of local government, he contributed extensively to community life. He served as a school governor at Ysgol Derwenfa County Primary in Leeswood and Castell Alun High School in Hope. He was also involved in numerous local groups, including as manager of a football team, youth leader, secretary of the Racing Pigeon Club, Chairman of the Leeswood Carnival Association and President of the Leeswood Allotment Association.
Council Leader Dave Hughes said: “Councillor Hughes was a true champion for his community in Leeswood. He cared deeply about local people and worked hard to make a difference. Beyond his work as a councillor, he was a much-loved father and grandfather and dedicated his time to charities and groups to benefit the local community.”
“Councillor Hughes will be missed by all of his colleagues and friends at Flintshire County Council, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
As a mark of respect, the flags outside Ty Dewi Sant were flown at half-mast.
