A message reading “433,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions prevented from climate-damaging landfill” was lit up on the side of the Parc Adfer energy-from-waste facility in Deeside this week to mark Wales Climate Week.

Since becoming operational in 2019, the enfinium-operated site has diverted around 1.15 million tonnes of unrecyclable waste from landfill, preventing over 430,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Parc Adfer, part of the North Wales Residual Waste Treatment Project (NWRWTP), processes waste from five local authorities across the region and plays a central role in reducing landfill use while contributing to Wales’ high recycling performance.

The plant continues to operate under its environmental permit, regulated by Natural Resources Wales.

The regulator has reported no permit breaches during 2025, and emissions have remained well below permitted levels.

Under European energy efficiency criteria, Parc Adfer retains its classification as a recovery facility, meaning it generates useful energy from non-recyclable waste.

Flintshire County Council, which leads the regional partnership overseeing the site, said the plant operated as normal through 2025, including during its planned maintenance shutdown in June, with no disruption to waste collections or deliveries from partner authorities.

Parc Adfer has also established a £230,000 annual Community Benefit Fund to support environmental projects in the Connah’s Quay area and maintain its visitor and education centre, which has hosted local schools and community groups.

Looking ahead, enfinium has announced plans to install carbon capture technology at the site, capable of removing up to 95% of CO₂ emissions — around 120,000 tonnes a year — equivalent to taking nearly 90,000 petrol cars off the road.

If developed, the carbon capture project would make Parc Adfer the largest carbon removals site in Wales and support the Welsh Government’s target of 100% zero carbon power by 2035.
